What Does the Science Say?
Broccoli (Brasscia L. Italica) is an edible plant with high contents of bioactive chemicals such as glucosinolates (including glucoraphanin and sulforaphane), phenolic compounds (quercetin, kaempferol), vitamins C, E & K as well as iron, selenium and many other minerals .
A wide body of research has demonstrated Broccoli’s significant antioxidant, detoxifying and even anti-cancer potential thanks to its contents [1,2]. Broccoli-rich diets have shown a key role in the prevention of many chronic diseases (including cardiovascular) and carcinogenic pathologies (breast & prostate cancers). Consumption of Broccoli can mediate many of the body’s vital functions, including the delivery of antioxidants and regulation of many enzymes controlling the apoptosis of the cell’s cycle.
AcuIntegra’s Broccoli Powder Extract is made out the entire broccoli plant: it includes the stems, leaves, florets and sprouts. Extracting only certain active ingredients (such as sulforaphane) would eliminate many vital phytochemical and minerals important for the entire plant’s health benefits.
Clinical studies suggest that the protective effects of Broccoli are not only attributed to sulforaphane, but also to other important compounds such as kaempferol. A study on rats by Keck et al. reported that whole broccoli intake caused a significant increase in hepatic EROD (ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase) detoxification enzyme level by 36%, whereas sulforaphane on its own caused it to decrease by -9%.
Other studies suggests that the many bioactive compounds of broccoli can have other applications as well. In particular, broccoli powder extract was observed to act synergistically with standard H-pylori treatment in type-2 diabetes patients. Favorable changes in HSCRP (High-Sensitivity Reactive Protein) levels and the serum lipid profile were also observed .
